DRGW 2-8-8-2 #3501 - Denver & Rio Grande Western         
Great shot of the massive DRGW 2-8-8-2 #3501 surrounded by the mountain range it helped tame with its tremendous tractive effort of 107,374 lb. Built by ALCo-Richmond in May of 1923, the Malley compound (sometimes referred as "Chesapeake" type) served the DRGW hauling very long drags of cars or in a helper position in the western mountain ranges. It served through WW II and finally was crapped in September of 1951. Original specs - 57" drivers, impressive 240 psi boiler pressure, 25x39" hihg prooure cylinders, 32x57" low pressure cylinders, engine wt of 534,000 lb, and massive tractive effort of 107,374 lb. The photo is from the Tom Klinger collection. No date or location was given for the photo so approximates were used.
