NJT 4101 is on train 1159 at Waldwick, NJ 12/15/2022. Still running in commuter service 54 years after it was built, The 4101 has been restored to its NJTDOT "Bluebird" paint scheme it wore from 1979 until it was repainted in NJTransit's silver and disco stripe scheme sometime after 1983. The 4101 was delivered to the CNJ in 1968 as their 3672 and wore B&O blue. The numbering in the 3600's and the B&O blue paint was done as the B&O financed the GP40P's and the B&O intended to take the GP40P's back if CNJ stopped running commuter trains. Instead, NJDOT bought out the GP40P's and they continued to be the backbone of commuter pool on the Raritan Valley Line at least until 1983 when F40PH's and CometII's began to replace the GP40P's and the "Jersey Builder" coaches during the 1980's. The Ex-CNJ units received a second rebuilding in the early 1990's replacing the steam generators with HEP. They have been primarily assigned to Hoboken and former EL territory ever since. |
