PRR 8607, APS-24MS, 1958
Volkmer. Here is an image of a photo by William D. Volkmer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 19 July 1958. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8607, #8610, and an A-A set of GM-EMD EP-22's whose road numbers are not recorded. #8607 and #8610 are APS-24MS's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 2,400 horsepower each. #8607 was constructed in December of 1956, while #8610 was built in January of 1957. In this context, they're pulling a passenger train that's just leaving the Altoona Station and heading up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where the ALCo's will uncouple and return to this location and await another helper run up "The Mountain." Photo taken from the 17th Street Bridge. William E. Burket Collection.
