PRR 9700, BF-15A, #2 of 2, 1957
Kern. Here is the second of two duplicate 35mm color slides of photos by Fred Kern that were taken near View, Pennsylvania, on 20 October 1957. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9700 and two more "BF" Class units whose road numbers are not recorded. All were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. #9700 is a BF-15A constructed in April of 1950, rated at 1,500 horsepower, and retired in February of 1965 after just 15 years of revenue service. In this context, this A-B-B set is rockin' 'n' rollin' with a long string of empty hoppers on their way back to Altoona and the coal mines of Western Pennsylvania.
