Southern Pacific (Texas & New Orleans) Mk-5 class 2-8-2 780 was awaiting some attention at the railroad’s ALGIERS SHOPS. The locomotive had been built by Alco’s Brooks Works in 1916 (55966) and was scrapped in March 1954. The bridge on the right was the Newton Street Viaduct, which crossed the railroad’s property. After the shops closed, Newton Street was built at ground level on former railroad property, and this new construction was dedicated on 4 February 1961.
