Horseshoe Curve-1948. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred McLeod that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in the Summer of 1948. Shown here is a Pennsylvania Railroad K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" steam locomotive helping two GM-EMD E-7 Diesels pull the ten-car "Metropolitan" around the Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Pittsburgh and points West. Partially visible at the right are three of Altoona's reservoirs. This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Pennsy Steam Locomotives" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (109-8). |
