Horseshoe Curve-1961. Here is an original photo that I took at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 17 August 1961. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #5708, #5707, and #5709. All are EP-22's built by GM-EMD in October of 1952 and rated at 2,250 horsepower each. In this context, they're pulling a mail & express train around the Curve and down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona and points East. |
