Doghouse. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad rolling stock just East of WYE Tower in Duncansville, Pennsylvania, during March of 1966. Shown here is the coal-bin of the first tender, as seen from the coal-bin of the second tender. This is what the locomotive engineer and fireman would see: Dutch doors on the coal-bin itself, and a channel in the floor for the coal to feed into the mechanical stoker. Until Federal rules were published in 1923, most steam locomotives were hand fired ~ up to 5,000 pounds of coal per hour! |
