CN unit train of 2-bay covered hoppers approaches the Main St. overpass as it rolls past a halted mixed freight on the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 27 Sep. '15. The large Clearwater Paper Corp. mill (originally Lakeside Paper Co., most commonly known as Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview Mill), which receives rail service, looms background left. The partially demolished Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) is visible in the background. Opened in Jan. '98, it has stood idle since 15 Jun. '13. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties, next to the 5th and 6th covered hoppers, rest atop the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. |
