Fred Stuckmann General Nice shot and location. 7/9/2010 8:40:09 PM
Jim Dodds General Neat shot! I love the arch bridge and the signal. Interesting how there's a third rail by the track. What's up with that? Seen on the homepage 2/18/2011 11:13:33 PM
David Larrabee General Gee a great shot, More? /DL 2/19/2011 7:08:22 AM
Tom Beckett General To Jim Dodds....the third rail was built by NY Central from Grand Central to Harmon on the Hudson Division, and originally to North White Plains on the Harlem Division, and was later extended to Brewster North(now Southeast) about 1983, to power MU electric trains in and out of Grand Central. The line is in a tunnel south of 96th Street in Manhattan. In 1907, NY City banned steam in Manhattan, which prompted the electrification. The New Haven had the FL 9(pictured) built in 1959/60, the last F units built, to use the third rail south of Wakefield Jct, about a mile or so north of this photo, which is in the Highbridge section of the Bronx, and diesel beyond. Most of the trains here are MU electrics using the former NYC lines; there are also New Haven trains that use the line into Grand Central, taking power from third rail here, and catenary north of Wakefield, which is at the Bronx/Westchester line. There were still FL 9's in service until about 2 years ago, when all were finally retir 5/16/2011 4:39:00 PM
Tom Beckett General All of that said, it's a great shot. I can feel the dampness of the AC in the car you're shooting from, and the humidity hanging in the air. I miss the sweet sound of the 567's in the FL 9 as it passes. Highbridge has a great urban landscape, makes for a really gritty, nuts and bolts, high density rail scene, even though this was just another one of hudreds of trips that ran that day. I grew up in NY, there's nothing like the commuter railroading there to be found anywhere else. 5/16/2011 4:58:01 PM
