Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5783, a BP-20 built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in November of 1948, rated at 2,000 horsepower, and retired in November of 1964 after just 16 years of revenue service. This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Diesels On The Pennsylvania" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (819-24).

Description:  Wood. Here is an image of a photo by Don Wood that was taken near Bay Head Junction, New Jersey, c. 1956. Wood's Caption: "Bay Head Jct. afforded many opportunities for shooting the unusual. Case in point: K-4's 5439 and 3750 flank passenger 'Shark' 5783." #5439 is a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during March of 1927 and retired in April of 1958. #3750 is a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" constructed in Juniata as number "3750" in March of 1920, renumbered "1737" in 1956, and presently on display as number "3750" at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg. And #5783 is a BP-20 built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in November of 1948, rated at 2,000 horsepower, and retired in November of 1964. William E. Burket Collection.

Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #5783 and #5572. Both were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. #5783 is a BP-20 constructed in November of 1948, rated at 2,000 horsepower, and retired in November of 1964. #5572 is a BS-10A switcher built in January of 1950, rated at 1,000 horsepower, and retired in February of 1967.

Description:  Here is page seven of a 14-page camera study by W.A. Feibelman entitled "Altoona Interlude." It was published originally in his (1979) monograph entitled "Rails To Pittsburgh: 1945-1970," page 63. Top Photo Caption: "Having arrived at Altoona, the fireman is leaving the mirror-shiny Sharknose 5785, which is less than a year old." Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5785 is a BP-20 built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in November of 1948, rated at 2,000 horsepower, rebuilt as a BF-16Z freight unit rated at 1,600 horsepower in 1952, and retired in 1962. Note the steam locomotive parked near the 12th Street Footbridge.

Description:  Here is page 14 of a 15-page cover article by Walter A. Lucas entitled "Pennsy Power Parade." It was published ioriginally n the December 1954 issue of "Railroad" magazine, page 23. Top Photo Caption: "Wind-tunnel test shaped silouette of these Altoona-built streamlined passenger steamers. K4s Class still runs on parts of the PRR high iron." Engine #3768 is a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during June of 1920, streamlined in 1936, and retired in October of 1953. Middle Photo Caption: "The latest thing in electric motive power is this beautiful two-unit Westinghouse job, shown leaving Philadelphia for a fast run to Patomac Yard." Engine #4996 is an E-3B built by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton and Westinghouse during June of 1951 and retired in June of 1965. Bottom Photo Caption: "No. 5786, typical of PRR's diesel fleet, pulls out of Chicago on Eastbound run." Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5787 and two "BF" Class B-units whose road numbers are not recorded. All were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. #5787 was constructed as a BP-20 rated at 2,000 horsepower in December of 1948, later regeared and reclassified as a BF-16Z rated at 1,600 horsepower, and retired in September of 1962 after just 14 years of revenue service. They're about to pass through the Huntingdon Passenger Station with a manifest freight train bound for Conway.
