CN 9455 |
Description: |
CN local passes the former SOO depot in order to execute a run around while servicing Waupaca Foundry, Plant 1, at Waupaca, WI on Independence Day, 4 Jul. '15. This depot was built by WC in 1907 and opened in 1908; it is the 3rd WC depot at Waupaca. Passenger service ended in Jan. ‘65, but the railroad continued to use the depot until 1987. It stood vacant and decaying for many years until restoration began after it was purchased from the CN in 2004. The previous wooden depot had burned down on 5 May 1907. That 2nd depot was completed in Apr. 1881, when the original ca. 1871 depot was converted into a freight house. That original depot, then freight house, burned down in Nov. ’48. That led to the construction of the current brick freight house in early 1949, it is partially visible to the right of the locomotive. |

Patriotic CN 9455 on Independence Day '15 |
Description: |
A patriotic U.S. CN local crew clears Oak St./Hwy. E (formerly Guard St.) via former SOO rails as they service Waupaca Foundry, Plant 1, at Waupaca, WI on Independence Day, 4 Jul. '15. I wish could have captured a better photograph of the American flags they mounted on the cab of their locomotive today. One of the flags had become partially detached during their journey from Neenah to Waupaca, but one of the crewmembers climbed up to refasten it when they had cause to pause during their labors here. The interesting old building on the left is the remnants of the Moore-O-Matic (Chamberlain Group, Inc.) facility, a seemingly abandoned industry that received rail service at some point. |

CN local crosses the Fox River via former C&NW bridge in the Flats at Appleton, WI on 27 Jul. '15. It looks like a solitary railroad bridge from a distance, but there are actually two bridges a few feet apart. The second, nearer, one is the former MILW bridge, now sans rails. Part of the Oneida Skyline Bridge helps to frame the scene. Local was headed back to the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction after servicing eastern Appleton, Kimberly and Combined Locks. |

Hwy. 96 used to be Hwy. 10, until the latter's expansion and relocation ca. '97. The Dale feed mill was built between 1889 and ‘08, when it was Northern Grain Co. By ’10 it was the Western Elevator Co., Western Grain Co. in some references. It was the Steffen’s Elevator Co. from ca. ’21 until at least ’68, it was purchased by John H. Steffens and later run by his sons. It was Dale Feed Service from ca. ’73 until at least ’81. It has been home to Earth Sense Energy Systems, Inc., since ’96. Train was headed for Waupaca. |

CN local crosses N. Lake St. as it services the large Clearwater Paper Corp. mill, historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill via former SOO rails at Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI until 14 Apr. '16) on 28 Feb. '18. Originally incorporated as Lakeside Paper Co. on 9 Nov. 1910, construction of the mill began in ’11, and paper production commenced on 12 Jun. ‘12. At some point they started to sell a large share of their book paper production to Sears, Roebuck & Co. for their catalogues. The mill was sold and re-incorporated as Lakeview Paper Co. on 9 Aug. ’20. Sears, Roebuck & Co. bought the facility ca. the mid- to late-‘20s. The mill was shut down on 1 Feb. ’29 after a boiler failure and Sears promptly sold it to the Canadian firm of Fraser Paper, Ltd. (which also produced book paper for Sears). Fraser did not hold it long, they sold it to Kimberly-Clark Corp. ca. Mar. ’29. Kimberly-Clark sold the facility to American Tissue Mills ca. Aug. ’96. The mill abruptly shut down on 6 Sep. ’01 due to American Tissue’s significant financial problems. The briefly idled mill was purchased by Cellu Tissue Corp. in ’02 and was renamed Cellu Tissue Corp. - Neenah, commonly shortened to Cellu Tissue - Neenah. Cellu Tissue Corp. was acquired by Clearwater Paper Group in ’10. The mill is a longtime rail customer, a map from 1955 shows 6 spurs to service this paper mill, now there are 2, but only this sees regular use. |

CN local rests along Hwy. 41 on former C&NW rails at Snells, WI on 28 Feb. '18. Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This small, rural community once included a post office, depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. Snells was located at Mile 183 on the SOO’s Trevor to Somerset line and Mile 173.1 on the C&NW’s Milwaukee to Marinette line. I do not know if each railroad had their own small depot, or if one small depot served both railroads, I suspect it was the latter. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone. The former SOO main line can be seen on this side of the train. |

A CN local crosses S. Perkins St. while traversing the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 7 May '18. The Mountable Raised Curb System with Vertical Panels (one variant of FRA approved traffic channelization devices) has been installed within the past few days as part of Appleton's quest for so-called 'Quiet Zone' status. This particular set is the FG 300 Curb System manufactured by Davidson Traffic Control Products (absorbed by Pexco, LLC in 2000). |

A CN local approaches N. Lawe St. as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 13 Jun. '18. The north side of the historic Tuttle Press Co. factory, 600 E. Hancock St., Appleton, WI, is partially visible at left. The first part was constructed in 1905, over the years the factory grew until it occupied the entire city block as it does now. A. F. Tuttle, founder and president, invented the first multi-color web printing press for printing tissue paper. The company was purchased by Northern Paper Mills, Green Bay, on 18 Sep. ‘29. Fox Valley Corp., nothing but a holding company, purchased it at some point prior to the mid-‘70s. It continued to operate as Tuttle Press Co. until early ‘83, when the holding company merged it with George S. Carrington Co. of Leominster, Mass., to form Artfaire. Fox Valley Corp. moved this facility’s production to one of their other subsidiaries in Tenn. around ‘90. The facility then became Sulpaco West, Inc., part of Sullivan Paper Co. in Mass. They shuttered this facility on 27 Jun. ’02, when they moved its production to one of their other facilities in Mass. For about a century the facility produced a variety of renowned specialty papers: napkins, table covers, tissue, craft paper, paper dolls, gift boxes, crepe paper and especially gift wrapping paper. There haven’t been any business signs on the building for several years, but I’ve seen Appleton Papers/Appvion trailers parked at the loading docks in the past. Some vague internet references suggest that it has also been used by Milltown Paper, Inc. in the not-too-distant past. The guard rail next to the covered hopper stands where the N. Union St. grade crossing used to be. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna. |

A CN local approaches the Main St. overpass as it traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 13 Jun. '18. The east leg of the wye is partially visible beyond the train. The white building at right is, or was, Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse (K-C Warehouse)). It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. Train was returning from Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. Several of Neenah's hideous, modern edifices contaminate the skyline in the background at right (I am obviously not a fan of modern, so-called, architecture). |

Description: |
A CN local crosses N. Oneida St. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 1 Jul. '18. One of the C&NW's 3 Appleton depots stood to the right, on the south (right) side of the tracks between N. Appleton St. and N. Oneida St. The downtown depot closed ca. 1958 and passenger operations were concentrated at the Appleton Junction depot. There used to be at least 5 tracks here in front of the depot, now, only 1. The historic, tan building in the background was the S. C. Shannon Co., 531 N. Morrison St., 767-779 Morrison St. in original street numbering system. The facility is currently occupied by the Appleton Area School District and Aramark Food Service. Previous occupants include General Cheese Co., Inc., ca. '58. It used to receive rail service, but has not for quite some time. The short, black metal fence guards the boundary of Oneida Heights, 525 N. Oneida St., an apartment complex for seniors. It was built upon the site of several historic, rail served industries. Train was headed back toward Neenah after working Little Chute and Kaukauna. |

A CN local crosses W. 2nd St. while setting out a string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 8 Nov. '18. Train will soon continue on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. Carter's Caboose, 1428 W. 2nd St., a small, old, rail side tavern, stands at right. It dates to at least 1930, when it was a soft drink establishment owned by Hubert J. Merkel and August F. Brandt (Prohibition was still in effect). By ’36 it was a tavern operated by Albert Giesen, owned by Mrs. Gretchen Merkel. By ’38 it was Bob’s Tavern, still owned by Mrs. Merkel. It was the Junction Tavern from at least ’43-’71, still owned by Mrs. Merkel until at least ’60 (there were at least two different owners between ’67-’71). At some point in the ‘70s it became Pete’s Junction (possibly Palomino Pete’s Junction). It was called Netticoat Junction ca. the ‘90s (owned by Joanne M. ‘Nettie’ Nett). |

A CN local parallels 4th St. and crosses Appleton St. while working in the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 18 Jan. '19. I am rather fond of the haggard signal relay case. The facility partially visible in the background at right is currently home to Alliance Industries, 320 Appleton St. The facility was home to Menasha Mill Supply Co. from at least 1939 through the 1970s. It could be serviced by the SOO and MILW simultaneously. |

A CN local approaches Racine Rd. as it heads southwest with 5 cars via former MILW rails at Menasha, WI on 25 Mar. '19. The road is the dividing line for this portion of the absurdly convoluted border between the City of Menasha and the pretentious Village of Fox Crossing (formerly the Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, until 14 Apr. '16). The train was in the former; I was standing in the latter. The turnout is used to service Orbis, 1320 & 1328 Earl St., (the owner of the silos at right). |
