Viewing Album: Long Island at night
By:
Tom Beckett
Dates:
1/1/1980 - 1/1/2011
Album Info:
The LIRR is a 24 hour operation. While its world is primarily daytime runs, it has a different character at night. Back in the mid 80's, I worked for Friendly Ice Cream as an assistant manager in their Albertson NY restaurant. My schedule was mostly nights, starting at 4 or 5 PM, working to close, which was either 11 or midnight, depending on time of year. After work, I'd go to Mineola and watch the late night parade, which in addition to the usual passage of MU trains, included diesel powered trains to Ronkonkoma, Oyster Bay, and Montauk. It was also a good time to catch the west end road freights, RF 11 eastbound, which usually followed the last Oyster Bay train through Mineola around 1:30; and RF 91 westbound, which was more erratic, sometime appearing between 1 and 3 AM, but often later. RF 11 was the train to see. It would follow the Oyster Bay train, which left the Main Line at Mineola, holding back west of Herricks Road til the passenger train cleared Nassau interlocking, then putting it up into Run 8 once he had the signal. He'd come through Mineola running flat out, gaining speed in an unbelieveable show of smoke, noise, and fire from the stacks of the C420's that were assigned to the train in those days.

Engine change
Description:
A C420 is taking up the rear on this Ronkonkoma train at Mineola. There was a GP 38 leading, and one of the FA 1s as a power pack. The only thing I can figure is the Alco was being dropped at Pine Aire for the freight, which must have had one of its units fail.

Description:
RF 91 was the westbound road freight that ran Sunday through Thursday nights from Pine Aire to Fresh Pond. Description:
The late night Oyster Bay train makes its station stop at Mineola, and is looking at the restricting signal it will accept to take the switch to head up the branch. It will be held to 15 MPH through the turnout, then get a clear signal at the next automatic, just the other side of 2nd Street, to head up the branch.

Former Worlds Fair car
Description:
After the M-1s were on line, they bumped other cars along. The ping pongs-the P54s-were largely retired. in their place, MP72s and 75s were converted to diesel hauled cars. Every once in a while, one would give away its previous life. Here, the side number board from the first of the ten MP75 cabs equipped cars shows on a late night at Mineola on an Oyster Bay train.

Doubleheaded power

Not exactly. My guess is the MP 15 power pack was not the unit the engineer wanted in the lead, so he swapped the GP 38 from the west end. Its also possible its just a power swap. Either way, its an unconventional arrangement. Rolling through Mineola late at night.

RF 91
Description:
In a mood shot at the New Hyde Park station, RF 91 arrives and prepares to switch a customer on the westbound track just east of the station. There is a long running track here east of the New Hyde Park Rd crossing that allows the power to reach several customers without having to use the main track for headroom, although they will leave most of their train on track 1 while they switch. Freight on this part of the railroad is done at night as there is less conflict with passenger runs. RF 91 usually runs west from Hicksville in the two hour gap between passenger trains that occurs from approximately 1 to 3 AM.

RF 91
Description:
RF 91 was the overnight westbound freight from Pine Aire to Fresh Pond, using the power that had been on RF 63 from Riverhead. Besides doing the road haul, it also worked at Hiucksville and did local switching en route. Tonights train has an MP 15 leading, which occasionally happened if there was not a C 420 ready. Its about 0300, and the train is working the siding east of New Hyde Park on the westbound side, requiring the train to stop in the station while the switch is lined. I took advantage of the stop to get a shot.

Quiet at Queens Village
Description:
RF 11, with consecutively numbered C 420's, cools its heels at the Queens Village station as it waits for a late night parade of passenger trains. Busy night
Description:
One of the things about night photos is that you can often see inside the trains, as they are pretty well lit. In this case, we see an Oyster Bay train making its stop at Mineola. Some riders have already gotten off the train, but theres still a pretty good crowd on board.

Mineola sunset
Description:
The late afternoon winter sun has dipped below the buildings as night falls on the station at Mineola. The platform lights are on, as are the lights on the station houses. The signals at the west end of Nassau are at stop as an eastbound train of M 1s approaches in the distance.

Title:
Moon over Nassau
Description:
A full moon shines over Mineola looking east from the station platform on the east side of the Mineola Blvd overpass. At center, the white building is Nassau tower, which controls the junction with the Oyster Bay Branch, a set of crossovers west of the station, and all the associated signals. It also conrols the plant at Locust, where the double track goes to single at the end of the branch. The eastbound home signal is set at stop, but it wont stay that way long, as the evening rush is underway.

Riding in style
Description:
Not the crew, which has the spartan accommodations of an MP 15 cab, but the riders in the first car, a subscription only parlor car catering to the high rollers of the area immediately around this station, among others. Seen as the sun sets on a late winter day. The structure at right was once Locust tower, controlling the switch and signals there at the end of double track. Now it is a Nassau County PD substation.
