Description:  Union Pacific Railroad DC-3 at Lincoln, Nebraska on an unknown day in October 1956, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. The DC-3 was built by the J. G. Brill Company in 1928 as Detroit & Mackinac 201 on Order 22749. As built, it was powered by a Hall-Scott 300 horsepower gasoline engine and GE electrical gear. It was purchased by Teledetector Company of Chicago in 1954 (along with D&M 202, same builder and construction date), and converted to a rail defect detector car. Apparently Teledetector was planning on competing with Sperry, but only the 201 was converted and was sold to the UP in April 1954, becoming DC-3 (03000). The DC-3 was modified in August 1961 (renumbered 90300 but still displaying DC-3) and again in 1984. It was sold for scrap in December 1986.

Description:  Union Pacific Railroad DC-3 at Lincoln, Nebraska on an unknown day in March 1962, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. This appears to be the second permutation of the DC-3 on the UP. It started out as a gas-electric built in 1928 by the J. G. Brill Company on Order 22749 as D&M 201. It was a Model 350 powered by a Hall-Scott 300 horsepower gasoline engine driving GE electrical gear. It seated 38 passengers and weighed 58 tons. In 1952 it was sold to Teledetector Company of Chicago and converted to a rail defect detector car. However, the company did not survive and sold the detector car to the UP in April 1954. It became DC-3 and still had the as-built Brill front. It was rebuilt in 1961, acquiring the brow over the front windows as seen here, and rebuilt again around 1983, acquiring yet another front end arrangement. Note that in this arrangement it has a single headlight and the Brill passenger windows were retained, to be replaced at a later date.

It went through several rebuilds on the UP, this being the final (I believe) arrangement before being retired in December 1986 and sold for scrap.

Description:  Union Pacific Railroad GTEL (Gas Turbine-Electric Locomotive) 12 at Cheyenne, Wyoming on August 27, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 12 and 12B were completed by GE during February 1960 (c/n's 33227 and 33228) and were actually a single locomotive. The first unit contained the cab, 850 horsepower auxiliary diesel engine, and other control equipment, the second (B-unit) contained the turbine and electric generators. Together they produced 8500 horsepower. The locomotive was capable of producing 10,000 horsepower, but the electrical system was not rated for that power. The tender contained 24,000 gallons of Bunker C fuel oil and was heated to enable the thick fuel to flow efficiently. The fuel tank under the cab unit contained 2500 gallons of diesel fuel for the auxiliary diesel generator, which was also used to start the turbine. This unit was retired in October 1969, victim of high fuel costs. The trucks were recycled under UP's U50C's.

Number S25 was built in January 1952 ( c/n 15835 ) as T&P SW8 816, renumbered T&P 8005, then MP 8005. In August 1981, number 8005 was cut down to a slug and renumbered MP 1416, in March 31, 1986 repainted in North Little Rock style lettering and numbered UP S25. Note the slug was equipped with a fuel filler, but I have not found evidence it was equipped with fuel transfer facilities.

Number 30 was built in June 1961 (c/n 34093), retired in February 1970, sold for scrap in August 1971. Number 30B (c/n 34094) shares the built and retirement information as 30. The tender was converted from a Class 19-C tender removed from a retired 3800 series 4-6-6-4, reclassed 23-C-GTE. Trailing Number 30 are two SD24B's, one SD24, and a caboose, followed by the rest of the train.

Description:  Union Pacific Railroad Yard Slug S30 at North Little Rock, Arkansas on September 13, 1988, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number S30 was built in February 1952 (c/n 15838) as Bauxite & Northern SW9 10. In 1964 the MP traded RS3's 975 and 977 for the 10 which became MP 1254, renumbered later to 1218. It was cut down to a yard slug in December 1981, becoming MP 1421 and on September 9, 1988 became UP S30. On May 20, 2000 it became UPY 924.

Description:  Union Pacific Railroad U50 31 near Omaha, Nebraska on October 26, 1963, Kodachrome by Lou Schmitz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Union Pacific's Chief Mechanical Officer, D. S. Neuhart, came up with the idea to replace as many as ten first generation locomotives (rated at 1500 hp each) with three dual power plant locomotives producing the equivalant 15,000 horsepower. All three builders responded, and GE delivered three U50's in October 1963. This is the first U50 in road number order, and this is likely the first run of number 31. Completed in October 1963 (c/n 34891), placed in service October 26, 1963, it was retired January 1974 and traded back to GE. It rides on trucks and span bolsters from UP's Standard and Veranda gas-turbines, which were taken out of service in 1962. The trucks and span bolsters were reconditioned by the UP at Omaha and shipped to GE, and the turbines carbodies were scrapped.

Description:  Union Pacific Railroad U50 38 at Council Bluffs, Iowa on June 13, 1965, Kodachrome by Lou Schmitz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built in July 1964 (c/n 35098), placed in service July 27, 1964, retired September 25, 1973 and traded to GE, the U50 was two U25B's on a common frame (two FDL-16 four stroke prime movers coupled to two GT588 main generators producing 5000 hp total to eight GE-752A traction motors), utilizing span bolsters and trucks from retired gas-turbine locomotives. One wonders why they didn't carry the red stripe sheet metal continuously across the top of the radiator intakes. The triangular shaped items on the running board, located almost over the center of each span bolster, are the sandboxes. The only other customer, the Southern Pacific, acquired just three U50 locomotives and they lasted a bit longer on the SP.

Description:  Union Pacific Railroad U50 41 at Council Bluffs, Iowa on May 2, 1965, Kodachrome by Lou Schmitz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built around August 1964 (c/n 35101), retired and traded to GE January 1974. A batch of 12 were delivered between July and September 1964, while a final eight were built May through August 1965. They were numbered 31-53. The number 72 appears in the engineer's side number board, and at the time of this photo, the UP (and the SP) were using the number boards to display the train number, not the locomotive number, so perhaps this locomotive last worked train #72. The trucks and connecting span bolsters came from retired gas-turbine locomotives. This locomotive was essentially two U25B's on a common frame. The UP had determined that the maintenance costs were independent of the power output of the locomotive, so the concept was to reduce maintenance costs by using a few large locomotives in place of several smaller locomotives.

Description:  Union Pacific Railroad C855 61 at Council Bluffs, Iowa on March 20, 1965, Kodachrome by Lou Schmitz, Chuck Zeiler collection. This locomotive was completed in June 1964 (c/n 84731) and retired August 1970.

The UP ran a competition between the three remaining domestic locomotive builders to come up with dual diesel locomotives as a unit reduction experiment. The brainchild of D. S. Neuhart, the UP's CMO (Chief Mechanical Officer), the concept was to replace as many as 10 first generation units with three dual engine units, which would develop 15,000 horsepower. By mid-1963, all three builders had designs ready, with Alco enjoying a 500 horsepower advantage, using two 16-cylinder 2750 hp Model 251C diesels, placed on the frame with the GT-598 generators facing the ends, and radiators located in the middle. Alco built three C855's, two with cabs and one B (booster), numbered 60, 60B and 61. The trucks and span bolsters came from retired gas-turbines reconitioned by the UP and shipped to Alco. The boxes on the running boards are for sand. At 86 feet in length, 16 feet 4¾ inches tall, the 5500 horsepower C855 tipped the scales at 528,000 pounds fully provisioned. The C855's spent their lives in the general freight pool based at North Platte, Nebraska. Unfortunately, they were prone to nagging failures, and with Alco's uncertain future, no more C855's were built. All three C855's were scrapped after a little over six years of service.

On August 4, 1988 it was renumbered to 65 and received the standard Union Pacific lettering. It was renumbered to UP 975 on October 13, 1989, renumbered again to 5573 on December 18, 1997, renumbered again to 1673 on August 4, 2004. You figure it out from here.

Description:  Union Pacific Railroad Brill M-69 at an unknown location (see comment below, thanks John) on June 2, 1957, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. The slide mount was simply marked: UP M-69 TRESTLE 6/2/57. If anyone recognizes the location, please leave a comment and I will correct this information.

Number M-69 was built by Brill in 1930 as Oregon Short Line M-69 (c/n 22866-1) and retired in May 1958. It was a Brill Model 350, weighed 57 tons, was powered by a Hall Scott 300 horsepower gasoline engine driving GE electrical equipment, and seated 70 passengers. It was retired in May 1958 and presumably scrapped. Nice trailing car, sorry, I couldn't accurately read any numbers, so I am relying on the slide mount to tell the truth.

This locomotive was completed in April 1965 (c/n 29985) on EMD Order 7797 and retired August 24, 1981 and scrapped. It produced 5000 hp from 32-cylinders (two 16-cylinder prime movers). When EMD built the DD35, the intention was that it was a B (Booster) unit, no control cab, to be mated to a GP35 for control. The DD35A version with a cab was built in 1965 for the UP (after the DD40 model had been announced) and had the sloping radiators that were applied to the 645-engine SD40 test units. While the DD40 was to have two 645 diesels, the DD35A had two 567D3A diesels. UP 70-83 were built using reconditioned GE 752 traction motors (with 74:18 gear ratio) from trade-in Alco FA and FB cab units. EMD used the designation 752E20A for these reconditioned traction motors. UP 84 was built in part using the reconditioned EMD D67B1 traction motors from wrecked trade-in UP GP9 159 and was equipped with 62:15 gearing. The DD40 design was cancelled in 1966, however, EMD did build 47 DDA40X Centennial locomotives for the UP starting in 1969.

Number 82 was completed in June 1965 (c/n 29996) on EMD Order 7797, retired in October 1979 and sold for scrap. It was built using reconditioned GE 752 traction motors (with 74:18 gear ratio) from trade-in Alco FA and FB units. EMD used the designation 752E20A for these reconditioned traction motors.

When EMD designed the cabless DD35, the intent was to use a GP35 (or any cab equipped locomotive) as the lead. There was concern about "nosing", the tendency for such a large rigid wheelbase locomotive to go straight when it encountered curves in the track, thus realigning the track. The track standards were better on the UP than some other railroads, and the problem did not materialize. So the UP asked EMD to install cabs on the next batch of 15 DD35's, and by the time of the order, EMD had some 645 prime mover equipped SD40's in field testing, so the DD35A's got the same flared radiators as the test units. UP DD35A 82 was equipped for Radio Control (RC) operation in May 1968, serving as the control unit, matching UP #82B which served as the remote. All radio control equipment was removed from both units during July 1973 at Salt Lake City, Utah.

It became UP 100 on April 11, 1986, retired May 27, 2005 and became the core for UPY 2659.

A total of 13 out of 82 former MP B23-7's were repainted UP yellow with Missouri Pacific as the road name. This unit was not among those with MP lettering, however, it has the North Little Rock style of UP lettering, using a more squared font, most noticable in the letters U, O, and C.

UP Cotter Bridge
Title:  UP Cotter Bridge
Description:  Union Pacific crossing the Cotter Bridge over the White River in Cotter, Arkansas on June 19, 1989, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Locomotives pictured are UP 117, 158, and 2178.

The bridge was built in 1903 by the Phoenix Bridge Company, and includes a 285 foot long turn span, deemed necessary by the Army Corps of Engineers as a result of river barge traffic, which in addition to moving commodities up and down the river, also brought in the steel for the constuction of this bridge. The river makes a 90 degree bend at this point. To the right, the railroad was built on the banks of the river for 40-50 miles or so, but to the left, the railroad ascends a steady 1% grade for the next ten miles. The first three spans to the right are level, as is the turn span and the first span to the left, but the next six deck girder spans begin rising at two plus feet in 320 feet. The total length of the bridge, not including the short five panel timber approach trestles at each end, is 1091 feet, 7½ inches. The turn span turned just once since built, for testing, and never turned again. The river barge traffic disappeared upon arrival of the railroad in Cotter.
