Title:  AMTK diner 8500
Description:  Amtrak 36-seat dining car 8500 was on the westbound SUNSET leaving New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. The car had been built by Pullman-Standers in 1949 as Southern Pacific 10204 for operation on the OVERLAND. It was purchased by Amtrak for “limited service” in 1974 and was retired in November 1977.

Title:  TASD Coach
Description:  This unnumbered Terminal Railway-Alabama State Docks coach was parked with some other cars at the former Gulf Mobile & Ohio station in Mobile. Its specific identity is unknown, but it appears to be one of Frisco cars 770-775, built by ACF in 1923 and rebuilt by the railroad during 1941 and 1945.

Southern 2351 CRESCENT HARBOR
Title:  Southern 2351 CRESCENT HARBOR
Description:  Southern Railway sleeper-lounge 2351 CRESCENT HARBOR was dead-heading out of New Orleans on the SOUTHERN CRESCENT. This was one of four CRESCENT-series cars built by Pullman-Standard in December 1949 for service on the CRESCENT, but they stopped operating between Atlanta and New Orleans in April 1964. These Plan 4160 cars had deluxe accommodations with 2 drawing rooms, 1 master room (with a shower), a buffet and a 21-seat lounge, and they remained on the SOUTHERN CRESCENT between Washington and Atlanta until the end of its operation. The only other lightweight cars built with master rooms were six Pennsylvania Railroad VIEW-series sleeper-lounge observation cars built by P-S for the BROADWAY LIMITED: four Plan 4080 cars in May 1938 and two Plan 4133 cars in January 1949.

Description:  Amtrak baggage-dormitory car 9992 was built by Pullman-Standard in 1947 as Santa Fe 3479 and was fitted with a high-level transition piece in 1956. It was photographed on train No. 4 - the westbound SOUTHWEST LIMITED - at the Santa Fe station in Winslow, Arizona. The 9992 was one of six similar Amtrak cars (9990-9995) and was retired in October 1981.

Title:  FTX 6
Description:  Finlay Fun-Time Tours car FTX 6 AUDUBON PARK, later AMTK 800106, was leaving New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal on the rear of Amtrak’s westbound SUNSET, right behind the train’s transcontinental sleeper. This car was built by Pullman-Standard in December 1955 as Union Pacific 6-section, 6-roomette, 4-double bedroom sleeper NATIONAL SCENE, one of 12 Plan 4197 cars in Lot 6957. The Wabash had three identical cars built under Lot 6966. These were among the last conventional sleeping cars built in the U.S.

<I>MISS ALVA</I>
Title:  MISS ALVA
Description:  This car had been completed by Pullman on 4 August 1911 as the Plan 2412 16-section sleeper MONTEITH. It was modified into a Plan 2412A car on 15 May 1924, converted into Tourist Car TC 4127 on 27 February 1935 and sold to the Louisiana & Arkansas on 4 Nov 1947 where it became 64-seat coach 353. After it was retired in 1963 it then went into private ownership, and was leased to Paramount Pictures in 1965 for use in their movie THIS PROPERTY IS CONDEMNED. The movie featured Reader Railroad 2-8-0 1702 and much of it was filmed along the Louisville & Nashville at Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. The car was repainted as L&N 6137 (a fictitious number) and named MISS ALVA, after Natalie Wood’s character. When this photo was taken 20 years later, it was badly-faded and being used as part of the MISS ALVA BAR AND GRILL in Meridian, Mississippi; but it was eventually parked with some other cars near the city’s Amtrak station.

The car had been built by Budd in 1961 as Union Pacific 5525 and was subsequently Amtrak 4457 and then HERITAGE FLEET car 4632. This car arrived in New Orleans on 14 November 2000.

Union Pacific 5508-5527 were the only Budd-built coaches owned by the railroad and became Amtrak 4440-4454, 6062, 4456-4459. During 1980-81 the 19 4400-series cars were rebuilt as HERITAGE FLEET cars 4627-4645, but not in order; and in 1996 13 of these were rebuilt into 1700-series baggage cars.

Description:  Former Amtrak coach 7612 had been built by Budd in 1951 as Pennsylvania Railroad 1593, one of 32 66-seat coaches with 14-seat smoking sections for service on the CONGRESSIONAL LIMITED and the SENATOR. It retained its original number on the Penn Central 1593 and was assigned Amtrak 7423 in 1976; but it retained its PRR/PC number until it was remodeled into high-capacity HEP CLOCKER car 7612 in November 1981. Amtrak sold the car to the Panarail Tourism Co. in 2000 and its tread brake trucks replaced the disc brake trucks under a 7000-series handicap accessible car that went to Panama.

Description:  Panarail Tourism Company coach RIO MAMONI was one of six passenger car that were shopped and remodeled in New Orleans for service on the Panama Canal Railway. The work was performed in and around the former Kansas City Southern diesel shop at West Yard by Peter Messina. RIO MAMONI and four other coaches were former Amtrak cars originally built by Budd in 1951 for service on the Pennsylvania Railroad's CONGRESSIONAL and SENATOR trains. Notice the open-air viewing platform which has been created at the far end of the car. This and three other cars were shipped from New Orleans, while the last two left from Houston.

Title:  PTC coach RIO MAMONI
Description:  Panarail Tourism Company coach RIO MAMONI was one of six passenger car that were shopped and remodeled in New Orleans for service on the Panama Canal Railway. The work was performed in and around the former Kansas City Southern diesel shop at WEST YARD by Peter Messina and his crew. This car was originally Pennsylvania Railroad 1575 and it kept this number on the Penn Central. It went to Amtrak in 1976 and was assigned number 7406, but it kept its original number until it was remodeled as handicap-accessible high-capacity HEP car 7006 in October 1981. This image illustrates how truck work was done at Pete’s shop. The 7006 came from Amtrak with disc brakes and received trucks with tread brakes from a sister car.

Description:  Panarail Tourism Company car RIO GATUN was outside of Pete Messina’s car shop near New Orleans, awaiting its final details. Notice the open observation area which had been added to the car. It was shipped to Cristobal, Panama on 30 March 2001 along with three other cars and five former Amtrak F40PH locomotives. Two more cars were shipped in October 2001. The car had been made by Budd in 1951 as Pennsylvania Railroad 1599, one of 32 60-seat coaches with 14-seat smoking sections built for service on the CONGRESSIONAL LIMITED and the SENATOR. It was subsequently Penn Central 1599 and it was assigned Amtrak number 7416 in 1976, but it retained its PC number until remodeled into high-capacity HEP CLOCKER car 7618 in December 1981.

Description:  Amtrak mail storage car 1754 began life in 1950 as Southern Pacific coach 2376, built by Budd for the SUNSET LIMITED. It was subsequently T&NO 449, SP 2237, AMTK 4424 and AMTK 4008, before being rebuilt into baggage car 1725. It was renumbered 1754 when it was designated a mail storage car. The little lettering on each end of the letterboard reads U.S. MAIL ONLY. The car was photographed on the northbound CITY OF NEW ORLEANS at Hammond, Louisiana.

The car had been built by Thrall in 1986 and was retired in July 2003. Cars 1400-1473 utilized the trucks from former Railway Express Agency express refrigerator cars.

Description:  This former Army hospital car named AZALEA was photographed at the New Orleans Public Belt’s engine terminal. Its interior had been stripped and it had been partially modified with an open platform. Coincidentally, it had been built with an open platform, but that was at the near end of the car! It was built by Pullman Car & Manufacturing Co. as a Plan 3959 3-compartment/2-drawing-room/lounge observation car, probably CENTRAL HOUSE (Lot 4886) on 11 September 1925 or CENTRAL POINT (Lot 4971) on 1 October 1926. It was remodeled as a U.S. Army HOSPITAL WARD CAR in 1943, and subsequent owners included William O. Savage then Al K. Nippert who donated it to the Louisiana Railway Heritage Trust. After this shot was taken, its remodeling was completed in 2005 by the Louisiana Steam Train Association (LASTA) as hospitality car LSTX 5 JEFFERSON.

Description:  Louisiana Steam Train Association hospitality car LSTX 5 JEFFERSON was on the rear of a LASTA train in the Kansas City Southern’s WEST YARD near New Orleans. The train was about to embark on an extended tour of Louisiana and a sliver of Mississippi. This former Army hospital car had been built with an open platform, but that was at the opposite end of the car! It was built by Pullman Car & Manufacturing Co. as a Plan 3959 3-compartment/2-drawing-room/lounge observation car, probably CENTRAL HOUSE (Lot 4886) on 11 September 1925 or CENTRAL POINT (Lot 4971) on 1 October 1926. It was remodeled as a U.S. Army HOSPITAL WARD CAR in 1943, and subsequent owners included William O. Savage then Al K. Nippert who donated it to the Louisiana Railway Heritage Trust.

Budd rebuilt it into un-named SLUMBERCOACH 10816 in 1961; it was subsequently assigned Penn Central number 4206, and then became Amtrak 2004. It was rebuilt as HEP car 2055 in 1982, and regained its original name! (date approximate)

Description:  WREN was one of eleven 16-duplex-roomette / 4-double-bedroom cars built by Budd in mid-1954 as Baltimore & Ohio 7100-7110. B&O 7110 was placed in service on 10 June 1954, became Seaboard Coast Line economy sleeper 6707 in 1969 and then Amtrak 2017 in 1971, and was renumbered Amtrak 2537 in 1976 when it was redesignated a first class car. The car was photographed at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal while being used as a dormitory car on a special train from Chicago. It was retired in 1985 and sold in 1988.

Ex-Amtrak 2231
Title:  Ex-Amtrak 2231
Description:  Former Amtrak 11-bouble-bedroom sleeper 2231 was parked at the New Orleans Public Belt’s engine terminal, on its way to the American Orient Express. The car was built by Pullman-Standard in March 1956 as Union Pacific CHEYENNE, one of 10 Plan 4199 5-double-bedroom/buffet/lounge cars in lot no. 6599. These were some of the very last conventional sleepers built in the U.S. It was rebuilt as 11-double-bedroom car STAR CREST in April 1965, and was assigned UP number 1701 in 1969, after Pullman stopped operating cars in the U.S. It became Amtrak 2251, then Amtrak HERITAGE FLEET car 2231, then American Orient Express 800768 SANTA FE and then American Railway Explorer ROCKY MOUNTAIN, although ARE never operated it. ARE sold it to the Greenbrier Express where it was tunneled for remodeling, but nothing more happened before Greenbrier ran out of money, and it was sold to the Union Pacific at the bankruptcy auction in 2014.

Description:  Eleven-double-bedroom sleeper 2233 SEBRING was at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal on the PANAMA LIMITED. The car had been built by Pullman-Standard in January 1956 as Seaboard Air Line 73, and became Seaboard Coast Line 6103. Amtrak sold the car in 1981 and it went to Mexico as Servicio de Coches Dormitorio 756 OVIEDO.

As of 2019 the car was at the Florida Railroad Museum in Parrish, Florida as RPCX 999995. (approximate date)

It was assigned Penn Central number 4380, and then became Amtrak 2796 in 1974. After retirement by Amtrak in 1977, it went to Mexico as SCD (Servicio de Coches Dormitorios y Conexos) 721 OCEANIA.

It became Atlantic Coast Line VOLUSIA COUNTY in October 1950, then Seaboard Cost Line 6657, and then Amtrak 2803. Plan 4167 sleepers had their bedrooms in the middle of the car, with five roomettes on each end.
