NKP 6
Title:  NKP 6
Description:  Nickel Plate Road 6 at Calumet City, Illinois on June 13, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. According to the Nickel Plate Historical and Technical Society's web page, this was the NKP's second #6, built by Pullman July 11, 1923, originally named Mountain City. It was a 12-2 Pullman, built to Plan 2521D, remodeled to Plan 4025H/4025R September 22, 1937, renamed Carleton Club, sold to the NKP December 31, 1947, retired in 1951, and converted to a business car. Another note states it was disposed in October 1964. I question that last date, I photographed it in the NKP yard in Calumet City in June 1965.

NKP NW2 16
Title:  NKP NW2 16
Description:  Nickel Plate Road NW2 16 at Calumet City, Illinois on June 13, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Classed as ES-10c by the NKP, it was built in October 1947 (c/n 4990) on EMD Order E854, it became NW 2016 in August 1967, and was retired April 17, 1982 and sold for scrap to Chrome Crankshaft. It appears to be set up for road service, with class lights and some device on the front truck for activating either signals or emergency brakes, I'm not sure which.

NKP NW2 17
Title:  NKP NW2 17
Description:  Nickel Plate Road NW2 17 at Pullman Junction on the south side of Chicago, Illinois on April 20, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in February 1948 (c/n 6088) on EMD Order E854, classed as ES-10c, it became N&W 2017 in July 1967, was retired July 10, 1974, sold to Martiki Coal Company (Lovely, Kentucky) becoming 17 again. Also of interest is the trailing caboose, N&W 559023. One can only speculate about a relatively recently overhauled wood caboose, with cupola markers no less. My best guess is that it was part of a restoration project that got cancelled when the merger came about, but I have no facts to back that claim up.

NKP RS3 537
Title:  NKP RS3 537
Description:  NKP RS3 537 built in March 1954 (c/n 80709), retired in July 1966, at Calumet Yard, Chicago, Illinois, June 13, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. The Nickel Plate (NYC&StL) had 23 RS-3's built by Alco around March 1954 on Order S-3222, classed ARS-16a on the NKP.

Field reports on the RS-2 indicated a few weaknesses that resulted in the RS-3 design. The initial RS-3 specification, E-1662, included the Model 244D prime mover (now rated at 1600 hp), which addressed misalignment between bearing saddles and caps that had led to crankshaft and bearing failures in the earlier versions of the 244. Although the truck wheelbase remained the same, the RS-3 was 6 inches longer (55 feet, 11 inches) than the RS-2, as a result of changing the belt driven auxiliaries to gear drive. In addition, the fuel tank was removed from under the cab to below the frame between the trucks, which forced the batteries to the short hood running board, creating a raised section on both sides. The short hood was widened to allow a dynamic brake option, or a steam generator. In the rare case of a customer opting for both, the short hood was raised, creating what was termed a "hammerhead". The RS-3 was equipped with a GT581 main generator driving GE 752 traction motors, interchangeable with FA-FB locomotives, simplifying maintenance stocks. This photo illustrates a late production RS-3. When introduced, the RS-3 had three rows of louvers on the long hood engine compartment access doors next to the radiator intake, and three more next to the cab, no louvers in between (21 units). The next group built had small louvers added to the rest of the access doors, but only at the top and bottom, and the battery box louvers were rotated from vertical to horizontal. Finally, Alco replaced the louvers with two carbody filters on each side. Laboratory tests which introduced "standard Arizona road dust" into the air intake indicated that although the lube oil filters were trapping the dust pulled in through the louvers, damage was still done to piston rings and crankshaft bearings. A retrofit package to replace the louvers with filters was offered by Alco.

NKP RS11 855
Title:  NKP RS11 855
Description:  Nickel Plate Road RS11 855 at Calumet City, Illinois on June 13, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in February 1959 (c/n 83019) on Order S-3305 for 14 units, classed ARS-18c on the NKP. It was retired May 1, 1974. The NKP purchased a total of 35 RS-11's in three orders, none of which had dynamic brakes. The RS-11 introduced the Model 251 diesel prime mover in 1956, which addressed several problems with the earlier Model 244 diesel, most notably was crankshaft failure. The crankshaft bearing surfaces were increased in width, resulting in a longer engine block for the 251. Alco reverted to the wet block design, testing had revealed that the Model 244 dry block introduced differential thermally-induced block expansion (the block expanded unevenly when hot), which caused mis-alignment along the crankshaft axis, contributing to crankshaft failure. The turbocharger was a water-cooled Alco design which incorporated an aftercooler to provide cooler combustion air. Cooler air is denser, thus more air could be introduced into each cylinder, improving combustion efficiency. In addition, Alco re-engined two Baldwin AS-16 road switchers for the NKP with 1800 hp 251B diesels. Note how Alco had to cast the poling pockets into the frame behind the steps.

NKP RS36 872
Title:  NKP RS36 872
Description:  Nickel Plate Road RS36 872 at Calumet City, Illinois on June 13, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in August 1962 (c/n 84105), on Shop Order S-3348, classed ARS-18e by the NKP. The RS36 was the result of sagging sales of the RS32. Alco decided to upgrade the RS32, incorporating all the improvements of the RS27 and RS32, retaining the DL701 specification. Powered by a Model 251B 12-cylinder prime mover producing 1800 horsepower, production ran from February 1962 to August 1963, for a total of 40 units built. The NKP received 11 RS36's, the last two with high short hoods containing steam generators. The NKP traded in its PA1's and Alco used the GT566 main generators from the trade-in's on the RS36 order.

NKP HT 34333
Title:  NKP HT 34333
Description:  Nickel Plate Road HT 34333 on the BN at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in April 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. According to the October 1971 issue of the Official Railway Equipment Register (ORER), page 128 under N&W, this was one of 443 cars in the 34000-34499 number series, 14000 pounds capacity (70 ton car). It appears to have built by Bethlehem. Also of interest is Southern 99442 car in the background (I could have framed this shot better). It was built in May 1974 (stencilled 5-74), so it is not in the ORER I have. It is also stencilled: RETURN PROMPTLY WHEN EMPTY TO SOUTHERN OR C OF GA ANY JUNCTION POINT. Sounds like the didn't want this car wandering off.
