Album Info:Today my buddy AJ Evans from Dayton and I explored some areas of Northeast Indiana he had yet to see. A big place on his list was Marion to get all the PLs and trilight signals that still stand in town. From there we worked up toward Fort Wayne then back south to Decatur. We picked up quite a few trains, even a few surprises. Enjoy!

NS 5097
Title:  NS 5097
Description:  My buddy AJ Evans and I had been planning to do a day trip over the summer, and finally we were able to squeeze some time in to do so today. One of his bucket list items was Marion, IN to get all the rare signals around town, including the very rare PL Pedestal Signal, which is 1 of 3 left operating in freight service. In order to get the most out of Mario, you have to start out early, which is what we did. After he arrived at my house, we took off south to Marion. NS had already had a train lined from the north to come back south and east onto the Redkey Secondary by the time we took off. We werent very sure if we would be able to accomplish getting there in time, but surprisingly we were able to get in to town before the train started making their way back toward Goodman. What shocked us even more was that the high hood was on this train, and would be leading the charge back into the yard. The high hood hardly ever sees time outside of Goodman Yard, so we were pretty excited to start the day with it. We got set up just in time on the west side of the diamond by GF Designs and grabbed our first shots there. Unfortunately my settings were a little wonky and things didnt come out as planned, but they didnt come out bad either.

Description:  On the rear of the 2 car consist was NS 6338. I couldve sworn this train was calling as L45, but I didnt think that sounded right since L45 was the relief for L42, and this train came from the north. Whatever it is, Im going with what I heard originally.

Title:  NS 6338
Description:  As it is with railfanning in Marion, a long wait was ahead of us before the next local would come out of the yard. A little over an hour later, NS L42 keyed up dispatch and told him they were ready to come downtown and go south. We raced over to the eastbound facing PLs on the Redkey Secondary, and AJ was finally able to pick up his goal; the pedestal signal.

UP 5617
Title:  UP 5617
Description:  We werent exactly sure what CERAs KOLO1 would be up to that day, but we did get word that there was a grain train that was being loaded the previous night in Amboy. Usually the grain trains get priority over all the other moves on the CERA so we decided to see if the grain train was about loaded and ready to come back east toward NS rails in Marion. We were met with quite the surprise when we noticed that half of the train was still needing to be loaded. We were pretty confident that KOLO1 would be doing something else during the morning. The power for the grain train was in a pretty shootable area so we took some stills. I still find it weird to find a big UP GEVO out in the middle of the Indiana countryside on a short line!

Description:  After Amboy, we went back into Decatur. Over the radio we heard that NS L23 would be going out to recrew a very late NS L44 north of Marion, so we decided to set up at the CP 78 southbound PL by the police station. After a bit, the train came south by the signal with a pair of big GEs and several autoparts box cars in tow.

Description:  As soon as L44 arrived back in the yard, CERAs KOLO1 asked for permission to come downtown, which gave us another opportunity to shoot a train coming by the pedestal. Sure enough, CERA showed up sooner than anticipated with a healthy cut of cars. AJ was quite surprised by the K5LLA attached to the GP15-1 leader!

NS 5192
Title:  NS 5192
Description:  HUGO seemed like it would be a good spot to sit for a while since there were trains coming in almost every direction on both the New Castle District and the Huntington District at the time, so I had us hold off these (much to AJs displeasure. Photographing GEVOs is the work of the devil apparently). We sat for some time before we heard NS DN14 key up the FTW Terminal Dispatch telling him they were clearing up off the GR&I ready to head back toward East Wayne with NS 5192 as the sole unit. Despite there being inbound trains coming at HUGO, there was no way we were going to miss an opportunity to see two high hood leaders outside of yard service in the same day. We raced up through the increasingly heavy traffic to the parking lot for the Journal Gazette on the northwest side of downtown just down from CP Runnion. There, the tracks cross the Saint Joseph River on a large trestle. I had never shot at this location before, and it made me quite excited to see that we had beaten the train before it took off and Id finally be able to mark this shot off my list. Minutes later, NS DN14 took off toward New Haven and the short chase to home base was on!

Title:  CFE 2098
Description:  CFE 2098 would serve as the second unit when the train would be put together and taken back up to Fort Wayne the next day. Tying the train down here has been a more common occurrence in the past year or so due to crew shortages. With that, AJ and I decided to call it a day and head for supper at Wings Etc. in Decatur. After supper we went back to my house and AJ went home. An extremely good day trackside with plenty of good catches and shots taken. I always enjoy showing people from out of town around my neck of the woods and the many things it has to offer for the railfan. A very good day had, until the next one!
