RRVW Snow Cutter #113 - Red River Valley & Western RR |
Description: |
Interesting pair of snow fighting equipment was captured by Eric Berg sitting in the Breckenridge yard. The yellow unit is a Jordan spreader while the red unit is a snow plow, more specifically a Bros snow cutter. According to the RRPA databse, it is listed as nee-GN X1500 and ex-BN 972560. However it should be listed as BN 972556 instead. This is actually a show cutter/blower rather than a snow plow that would chew through mounds of snow and push them to the sides with the extended "Jordan" type spreader wings seen here in yellow. |

RRVW Snow Cutter #113 - Red River Valley & Western RR |
Description: |
Looking at the front "action" part of the snow cutter, it is easy to spot the difference between it and a rotarty snow plow type. The paddles on this Bros type cutter cut through the snow mound and push it to the side where side flanges like a Jordan spreader direct it off the tracks. Eric Berg photo |

The "fireman's side" of the RRVW snow cutter. Two spotters would have been in the front section to relay info to the pusher loco. Eeric Berg photo. |

RRVW Snow Cutter #113 - Red River Valley & Western RR |
Description: |
The working front end does appear intimidating. Sure would like to see this unit in action. Bet it would be a noisy one with the chain driven cutting paddles clanking loudly when up to speed! Eric Berg photo. |

RRVW Snow Cutter #113 - Red River Valley & Western RR |
Description: |
Eric Berg visited Breckenridge yard about 5 months after the first group of pics in the album. Here is the same RRVW snow cutter (with the Jordan spreader behind) as in March. Don't think it saw much action during the winter. |

RRVW Snow Cutter #113 - Red River Valley & Western RR |
Description: |
Traditionally, railroad snow plows, blowers and cutters rarely saw much action but were absolutely needed when conditions went from bad to "impossible"( . . . or should that be "impassible"?). Eric Berg photo. |

Another side view of the Red River Valley & Western snow cutter #113 (ex-BN 972556, nee-GN X1500). From GoogleMaps images, I don't think the RRVW snow cutter is still around. Does anyone know its disposition? Eric Berg photo |

Great Northern Snow Cutter X1500 - circa 1960's-70's ?? |
Description: |
This photo was in the RRPA database and appears to be a photo of the new Bros snow cutter built for the Great Northern as their X1500 unit. Far cry from the look in 2002 when Eric Berg was photographing it. No accurate date was listed for the photo but would guess sometime in the 1960's-70's. |
