Title:  CB&Q Dome Coach 4736
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad dome coach 4736, named SILVER BRAND, date and location unknown, print stamped "Lawrence S. Williams Photographer Upper Darby, PA. Neg # 2607", Chuck Zeiler collection. I'm guessing this was shot at Budd's Red Lion Plant in 1956. Number 4736 was ordered for the Denver Zephyr in February 1955, delivered in August 1956, built on Job 9646-169 for two 46-seat dome coaches; 4735 SILVER BUCKLE and 4736 SILVER BRAND. Both cars were conveyed to Amtrak in 1971, CB&Q 4735 became Amtrak 9457, CB&Q 4736 became Amtrak 9458. It doesn't appear that either car was converted by Amtrak to HEP, and both were retired by Amtrak in March 1993.

CB&Q 4739 SILVER HALTER

Hand written on the back of the print: "Denver Zephyr Coach K22856-1" That number appears in the dirt below the right truck. Number 4739 was built by Budd on Job 9613-169, one of five 50-seat coaches ordered for the second Denver Zephyr in February 1955, delivered in February 1956, equipped with Heywood Wakefield "Sleepy Hollow" seats. Sometime after May 1, 1971 it became Amtrak coach 5016 , in November 1985 it was converted to HEP and renumbered Cafeteria 8716, rebuilt to Amtrak Cafeteria 8532 in November 2008.

CB&Q 4901 SILVER SLUMBER
Title:  CB&Q 4901 SILVER SLUMBER
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4901 SILVER SLUMBER, date, location, and photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. I think this was a CB&Q public relation photograph, the print was unmarked except for a hand written notation "CB&Q Slunbercoach". Number 4901 was built by Budd on Job 9691-169 for four Slumbercoaches ( #'s 4900 - 4903, Plan 9540 ), ordered in February 1955, delivered between October - November 1956. They contained 24 single and eight double bedrooms. Nu8mber 4901 went to Amtrak, becoming AMTK 2021, was converted to HEP in April 1980 and renumbered AMTK 2085, retired by Amtrak in September 1996.

CB&Q 6000 Silver Pendulum

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad coach 6000, named Silver Pendulum, eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on April 20, 1963, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This is a relatively rare car, only three were built by the Pacific Railway Equipment Company. This one was built January 1942 as a 60 seat coach. One was built for the Great Northern, and one for the Santa Fe. CB&Q #6000 is seen here in the consist of Train #48, which combined parts of the Northern Pacific's 'Western Star' and the Great Northern's 'The Blackhawk', for forwarding to Chicago from Minneapolis and St. Paul. The name 'Silver Pendulum' was derived from the car's design, which was described in both Railway Age (Jan. 24, 1942) and Railway Mechanical Engineer (Feb. 1942) as; 'Pendulum car truck is designed to support the car body 14 inches above the center of gravity and secure easy riding around curves at high speed'. There is a photo to go with that statement showing the truck, and it appears that the springs and stabilizers extend upward into the carbody a couple of feet, which probably explains the lack of windows over the truck centers.

CB&Q 6000 SILVER PENDULUM

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 6000, named SILVER PENDULUM, at the Zephyr Pit in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown date, photograph by William A. Raia, Chuck Zeiler collection. I estimate the date at around 1963, based on a photo I shot in 1963 of this car in service in and out of Chicago. This was a relatively rare car, only three were built by the Pacific Railway Equipment Company. This one was built January 1942 as a 60 seat coach. CB&Q PA-14A 7106

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad coach class PA-14A 7106 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on December 8, 1964, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This car was built by the CB&Q's Aurora, Illinois shops in August 1928 and was rebuilt in August 1949, retired and converted to MOW 251194 December 20, 1968 at Havelock, Nebraska. I don't know the exact retirment date. The CB&Q received 34 new bi-level gallery cars, including six cab-control cars, in 1965, which likely meant retirement for the single level cars. I remember seeing long lines of these cars stored in Eola Yard for some time during the mid-1960's.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad class PA-15 7143 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on December 31, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This car was built at CB&Q's Aurora shops sometime during 1929, was rebuilt in March 1950, and converted to MWX 251186 at Galesburg May 5, 1967. It is seen here at the rear of a westbound Dinky (commuter train), and the sign hanging on the gate says 2:10. I could not find a train scheduled to leave Union Station at 2:10 PM in either the Employees Timetable #9 or in the Suburban Train Schedule, so my assumption is that being New Years Eve, it is on a modified schedule. Often in this timeframe, workers were let off work early on holiday eves, and the Burlington adjusted their suburban schedules accordingly.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 7201 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on December 28, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 7201 was built by the CB&Q at Aurora, Illinois in 1929 as Class PA-15 7148, converted to power car 7201 on July 12, 1949. In the rear it contained a four cylinder Cummins diesel and a 40 kilowatt generator to supply electricity to commuter coaches.

CB&Q PA-15 7203

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad class PA-15 7203 at Aurora, Illinois on August 21, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This is the not often photographed side of one of the CB&Q power cars. The Burlington's practice was to place these cars on the outbound (west) end of the Dinkys (commuter trains) to keep the noise and exhaust fumes at the far end of Union Station in Chicago. This side would then be on the north side of the tracks, not often lit by the sun. This car was built in 1929 by the CB&Q Aurora Shops as PA-15 7150, during 1949 it returned to the shops for the addition of a Cummins six-cylinder diesel driving a Century 65KW DC generator, and the associated support equipment (cooling, diesel fuel tank, intake and exhaust grills, etc.). This particular car seated 68 passengers. According to the book, "Passenger Car Diagrams", by Railway Production Classics (a reproduction of CB&Q diagrams), #'s 7200-7202 seated 70 passengers, and #'s 7203-7205 seated 68 passengers. The difference being accounted for by the addition of crew lockers at the generator end of #'s 7303-7305.

Unfortunately, I could not match the interior configuration to any Budd car interior layouts as the drawings I used for reference showed restroom facilities at each end which offset the aisle to one side, thus the door would not be visible. It does appear to be a Budd coach, possibly one of the four coaches from the Second Twin Cities Zephyr, later the Nebraska Zephyr. Print scanned from Chuck Zeiler collection.

And taped on the back on the print was the following; Comfort and convenience are outstandingly apparent in the coaches of the California Zephyr. Cushions constructed of resilient rubber, generously upholstered chair arms, and new-styled, adjustable leg and foot rests promote sound sleep. Note how the recessed backs of the forward seats add extra space for those who wish to stretch out for the night.

The photo illustrates the Heywood-Wakefield Sleepy Hollow seat. Typical railroad coach seats were little more than padded benches, so the development of a comfortable seat was an innovation at the time. Life Magazine ran an article on February 11, 1946 about the seat , and here it is, entitled; Hooton's Chair Harvard Anthropologist measures 3,867 people for a railway seat:

The science of sitting down inched forward a bit last week. The Heywood-Wakefield Company in Gardner, Mass., biggest maker of railway coach seats, perfected one that more nearly fits the seated human body than any yet made. The company calls it the Sleepy Hollow Chair. Nearly everyone else is calling it the Hooton Chair. Reason for this name was that for months Harvard University's well-known anthropologist Earnest A. Hooton, and his staff of statisticians had been prodding and measuring 3,867 volunteers and compiling statistics to determine what U.S. travelers should have under them. His mass of results were used in making a new seat scientifically tailored to the average railroad rider. Meanwhile, experimenting with a wooden chair filled with sand on which people left the impressions of their posteriors, the Heywood-Wakefield Co. arrived at a set of conclusions which, to their dismay, were precisely the same as Dr. Hooton's. The photo captions stated: Fattest man tested in Dr. Hooton's special measuring chair was Adam Reimer, who weighed 325 pounds and measured 56 inches around the hips. Ordinary railway seat is too hard, too vertical for ample Adam Reimer. Few abnormal sizes were measured because they complicated Hooton's computations. New railway seat fits Mr. Reimer better. The deeper cushioning gives with his curves and the inclined seat distributes some of the load against the chair back.

Although I could not narrow the car down, the photo does match an interior shot used in the book, The Passenger Car Library, Volume 1 - CB&Q, by W. David Randall on page 49 showing the interior of tho observation end of one of the two cars for the 1936 Denver Zephyr. The two cars were 230 named SILVER FLASH, and 231 named SILVER STREAK, both built by Budd on Job 965, ordered in December 1935, delivered in October 1936.

CB&Q 7204

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad class PA-15 7204 (former PA-15 7151) power car at Aurora on October 11, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The CB&Q needed a source of electricity for the bi-level suburban coaches on order at Budd. During 1949, six PA15 suburban coaches were sent to the Aurora Shops for conversion to power generator coaches. A Cummins four-cylinder diesel driving a Century 40KW DC generator was installed in one end. The power cars, numbered in the 7200-7205 series, 7200-7202 had a seating capacity of 70 passengers while 7203-7205 seated 68. These cars were generally placed at the west end of the train, putting them at the far end when arriving at Union Station in Chicago so passengers did not have to pass by the roaring generators as they loaded and unloaded.
